On October 4th, 2008 The Knights of Columbus began the state wide project of raising money for the mentally disabled of Kentucky. Our Council, Bishop Maloney Council #2208 of New Haven, set up a road block on the corner of Main St. and Highway 52 where the only major stop light of New Haven exists. We began the day with three people at the intersection handing out tootsie rolls as people stopped their cars to generously give to the mentally challenged. In all, we had 11 of our Knights volunteer their time during this Saturday in October from 9:00 am until 4pm. and we collected over $637.00 in money and change.
At. around 4:00 pm when we were getting ready to stop our exchanges with passing motorists we came across a lady driving a Dodge Durango with smoke coming out of the engine. She immediately stopped at the intersection and all of the four remaining Knights in our Council looked under the hood of her vehicle. The main belt of the Derango had broken. The Knights pushed her car to safety in the parking lot of the Fivestar and proceeded to let her know that she would be helped. The Lady had three small children with her at the time and her husband is a truck driver who was away from home working. One Knight went to Bardstown to see about getting a new belt for the Derango. Another Knight who lived not far from her gave her and her children a ride home. The next day after the 10am Mass, these two good knights replaced the Derango's main belt and she was very thankful that the Knights had been there for her and her children. One act of charity led us to another act of charity. We hope that as we do the little things God asks us to do that we may continue to help those in need, especially our neighbors.
